JOURNAL FREE ACCESSPhenol was reacted with 1-chloro-2-methylbutene-3 (prenyl chloride) using phosphoric acid as a catalyst.
By means of gas-liquid chromatography, IR and NMR spectroscopy, the following products were identified ; 2, 2-dimethyl chroman, 2, 2-dimethy1-8- (3-methy1-3butenyl) chroman, 2, 2-dimethy1-8- (3-methy1-2-butenyl) chroman, 2, 2-dimethy1-6 (3-methy1-3-butenyl) chroman, 2, 2-dimethyl-6- (3-methyl-2-butenyl) chroman, 4 (3-methy1-3-butenyl) phenol, and 4- (3-methyl-2-butenyl) phenol.
The effects of the reactant ratios on the product compositions were clarified, and those reactions were compared with that between phenol and isoprene.View full abstractDownload PDF (533K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSThe chloroplatinic acid catalyzed reduction of alkylhalides by organosilicon hydrides has been assumed to proceed through a quasi-free-radical mechanism. This paper presents evidence to support such assumption. Namely, (1) selectivity found in this reduction is comparable with that effected in peroxide catalyzed reductions ; (2) some benzylic halides give the corresponding reductive coupling products (3) the characteristic color of diphenylpicrylhydrazyl in triethylsilane fades rapidly in the presence of chloroplatinic acid; and (4) the Hammett correlation for the relative rates of substituted chloroform (X-CC13) toward triethylsilane in the presence of chloroplatinic acid gives a ρ* value of +0.28, which essentially agrees with the value of +0. 29 previously found for the reaction of triethylsilyl radicals.View full abstractDownload PDF (1159K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSPartial chlorination of alkyl-and phenyl-polyhydrosilanes was accomplished using carbon tetrachloride or chloroform as chlorinating agent in the presence of benzoyl peroxide at 80°C in a yield ranging from 50 to 80%. The method will be widely applicable for the chlorination of hydrosilanes, since free radical-catalyzed disproportionation between the phenyl and hydrogen radicals attached to the silicon does not take place during the treatment. It was also shown that carbon tetrachloride was suitable for the partial chlorination of phenylpolyhydrosilanes, and chloroform for that of alkylpolyhydrosilanes.View full abstractDownload PDF (865K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSAttempts have been made to clarify the effects of the conditions of catalyst preparation on the activity of supported palladium-molybdenum oxide catalysts in the hydrogenation of acetone.
High activity was attained when the ratio of molybdenum metal and palladium metal (w/w) fell within the range of 0.2 to 0.8, and alumina seemed to serve as the best carrier.
Hydrogenation of acetone was markedly promoted in the presence of water and to some extent in the presence of isopropanol. Ethanol, on the other hand, inhibited the reaction. Furthermore, those catalysts were effective for the hydrogenation of methyl isobutyl ketone, cyclohexanone, and benzaldehyde.View full abstractDownload PDF (712K) -

JOURNAL FREE ACCESSReactions of trichloromethyl-s-triazines with aliphatic amines have been studied. Thus, a method has been established to permit mono-replacement of the trichloromethyl group selectively by an aliphatic amino group. By this method, a number of monoamino-s-triazine derivatives were synthesized starting from 2-substituted4, 6-bis (trichloro, methyl) -s-triazines.
