JOURNAL FREE ACCESSAcademic libraries facing difficulties such as the stagnation of cooperation among academic libraries and the training of the library staff need a orporate strategy of pursuing innovation. However, there is a limit to what an individual academic library can do through its own efforts. The Institute for the Assistance of Academic Libraries was started in 2007 in order to help an academic library in such a situation from the outside. Mr. Robert Massie, President of CAS, was one of the invited speakers. His presentation titled “CAS, Japan and the World of Chemical Information” included the 100-year history of CAS, how chemical information have evolved in those years, and the contribution of Japan.
